Robotic-assisted surgery has been designed and developed around the latest technological advancements and it assists surgeons in the most complex surgical procedures. The incisions are smaller than traditional open surgery (also referred to as minimally invasive) minimizing scarring, chances of infection, and it provides a faster recovery.

Robotic instrumentation is more precise and the instruments used can navigate through a patient with rotation and positioning that the human hand can’t achieve. The da Vinci System is touted as one of the most advanced surgical robots, and it has brought minimally invasive surgery to more than 10 million patients worldwide.

Benefits of Robotic Surgery

Patients often ask what tasks medical robots perform and are they safe. The da Vinci System is one of the most advanced robots in the market and its safety and effectiveness are “changing the experience of surgery for people around the world.” More so, the precision and maneuverability is far superior than that of the human hand.

The most important benefits of the robotic da Vinci System include having multiple arms and giving the surgeon more operating capabilities.  Its 3D and high-definition cameras with a magnified view give the doctor a clear view during a procedure, and its precise calibration and accuracy help ensure better outcomes in the most complex and delicate procedures.

How Robotic Surgery Works

Procedures may vary depending on the patient’s need, however robotic surgery typically includes the following components, which are all located in the same room as the patient and the physician and medical staff:

  • A Surgeons Console: The control center of the system is where the surgeon works and where they control the movement of the robotic instruments and endoscope.
  • Patient Side Cart: This area is composed of three or four articulated mechanical arms.   These arms support the endoscopic instruments & camera during the surgical procedure.
  • Electronic Cart: The component that holds the hardware and software.

Compared to traditional techniques, robotic surgery operates through very tiny incisions, which drastically reduce a patient’s time in the hospital. The HiDef 3D cameras allow surgeons to get close-up views of areas they are not able to see during open surgery.

In comparison to open surgery, having the assistance of a fully articulating robotic arm allows the surgeon to have greater dexterity and precise control which was not possible to achieve with traditional surgery and conventional laparoscopic instruments.

Types of Robotic Surgery

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Bariatric surgery may be suggested for patients with a high Body Mass Index (BMI) and other medical conditions related to obesity. Bariatric surgery can be done using open surgery through a large incision. Or it can be performed using a less invasive procedure through a few tiny incisions with traditional laparoscopy or the da Vinci Surgery Robot.

Hernia Repair Surgery

Hernias can only be repaired with surgery. We recommend you speak with our doctors about all your surgical options, including minimally invasive/robotic surgery. In early studies, patients notably reported feeling less pain during recovery from robotic-assisted hernia surgery. Patients have also reported feeling little to no pain one week after surgery and returning to their daily activities faster.
